DeviceNet™ is a fieldbus system that was devised in the USA which is now being used more and more in Europe and Asia as well. DeviceNet™ is based on CAN (Control Area Network) when it comes to physical layers 1 and 2 in the ISO 7-layer model. The so-called Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) is used in the application layer (ISO Layer 7). This is an open standard which is also used for ControlNet™ und EtherNet/IP. In future, it will enable consistent communications between the field level and the Internet.
